On Wednesday, June 24th, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela just seconds apart. The first measured 7.2 in magnitude, followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake, one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in a century. Since then, 214 aftershocks have also been reported.
The destruction is catastrophic. Across the capital city, Caracas, and surrounding areas, homes, hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed. As of today, Friday, June 26th, 589 people have lost their lives, 2,980 have been injured, and countless families have been displaced. Search and rescue teams are working around the clock to reach those trapped beneath the rubble.
